This is the VN basically in it's original format as the author released it, except with, uh, controversial new sprites as default which you can turn back to original sprites. The default way: The mangagamer releases which can be found on steam. If you do decide to start Umineko, I really hope you enjoy it and have fun solving the mystery! : Dįor reading the VN, there's a few ways to read the VN: If you choose to read the manga, don’t be like my friend and accidentally spoil yourself searching high and low for the 19th chapter of Legend. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of all three (Alchemist, Pachinko, and Ryukishi, from left to right): ) Ryukishi’s original sprites and the Steam/Pachinko sprites are accessible naturally on Steam, but if you’d like, you can use 07thMod to install the Alchemist sprites (which I believe are much cleaner). For the VN, there are three sets of sprites. You’ll have a much better experience than if you didn’t. Try to treat the story like a game and solve the mysteries yourself. Especially in the first few arcs, you’re going to be very, very confused. There’s also extra stuff, such as Golden Fantasia and Umineko Saku, but they all contain spoilers, so it’s best to view them in any order after you finish.įew final notes before you start reading. The Question arcs- Legend, Turn, Banquet, and Alliance- essentially pose the mysteries of the story, and the Answer arcs- End, Dawn, Requiem, and Twilight- give the “answers” to the mystery, so to speak. In terms of the order of Umineko, you have to read the Question arcs (Umineko no Naku Koro Ni), then the Answer arcs (Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru). There are also channels on Youtube that upload the entire thing with no commentary, if you’re more into that: If you do want to read the vn, you can buy the whole thing on Steam (it’s reduced atm) or, like the manga, get it through. Luckily, if you’re not into reading, there are lots of people who do lets reads on Youtube of the sound novel (I think Jokrono’s is my favourite, so I’ll plug that one here: ). The reason why I left it to last is because it’s very, VERY long. Obviously, the VN/sound novel is the superior method of going through Umineko. You can buy physical copies of the manga to support ryu (which is advised), but if that’s not possible then I reccommend mangadex since at least then you can support the scanlators. It’s also quicker to get through than the VN, and has a few scenes either added or different to the VN, especially in the later chapters- this has its own positives and negatives, but overall it’s not bad and you can definitely get to grips with the story with only the manga. The manga, unlike the anime, is very good and comparatively paces itself very well. The two remaining ways are through the manga and the VN itself. Also, it only goes halfway through the series, so you couldn’t watch the full thing anyway. It’s really bad, and there are multiple gaping plot holes, plus the pacing is awful and a lot of the really important scenes are left out. When it comes to Umineko there are multiple ways to get into the franchise, so I’ll just go through all of them!ĭON’T WATCH THE ANIME.
